Psalms 104:14-15
” You cause the grass to grow for the livestock
and plants for man to cultivate,
that he may bring forth food from the earth
and wine to gladden the heart of man,
oil to make his face shine
and bread to strengthen man’s heart.”

Imagine all the grass growing around the world.
Watching a time lapse video of plants growing is truly fascinating!

From one day to the next, none of us would notice a plant growing, yet it is.
The growth is incremental, but continuous. The growth is practically invisible to the naked eye, yet definitely happening.
It’s the same with children, I suppose.
I’m always fascinated when having not seen someone else’s children for a few months, and seeing them again and they’ve obviously grown! Even with my own children, I can’t always tell that they’ve grown taller by the day.
Mankind have figured out a lot of things with science.
We have learnt how to maximise production and have developed amazing agricultural techniques. We create huge farms where masses of seeds are planted and masses of harvest are collected season by season.
Yet, with all the technology and all our smarts, no scientist can “cause the grass to grow”.
Sure, we can put the seed in the right soil and give the right environment for it, but it’s God who does the growing. Sure we can feed our children, love and protect them, but only God can make them grow.
Similarly in our own lives, we can do a lot of things, but it’s God who causes the man to grow.
Both physically and spiritually, all of life actually relies on God’s active intervention. Perhaps that is what Paul meant when he said “in Him we live and move and have our being”.
28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’
Acts 17:28
The Spirit of God is the only one who can cause grass to grow; He is also the only one who can cause us to grow.
And though this growth and our sanctification may be invisible to the casual onlooker, we are still transformed into His image from glory to glory, day by day.
How miraculous! How marvellous! How mysterious! And may we just rest in the fact that He is working something miraculous, marvellous, mysterious in our lives, even now —
Let’s pray: “Dear Lord, thank you that You are the only one who can make us grow. Thank you that You impart life into our being and You bring change. How we want a change today, Lord — transform our lives inside out. Make a difference to our current living so we can live towards Your glory. Though these may be incremental, invisible change, help me never give up. Slowly but surely, we are becoming more like You. To You be the glory.”
